Army vet and father of 3 gunned down outside Chesterfield Wawa

CHESTERFIELD, Va. (WRIC) — A homicide suspect has been arrested following a police chase through multiple counties. The suspect was wanted in connection with a  deadly shooting outside of a Chesterfield Wawa on Tuesday evening.

The victim, 34-year-old Robert S. Gooch IV, of the 7700 block of Hampton Green Drive in Chesterfield, died at the hospital after being shot multiple times. Witnesses told 8News the victim’s daughter was with him at the time of the shooting and ran inside the store screaming.

Gooch’s neighbor says he served in the Army. He was a father of three kids.

“All of a sudden, the little girl ran in and she was screaming, and we heard gunshots,” said witness Tracea Bolin. “I don’t know what everyone said, but the girl jumped in the backroom and I jumped in there with her, and we locked the door. We were all thanking God for our lives tonight.”

Officers responded to the 16000 block of Otterdale Station Way after reports of a shooting at 7:13 p.m. According to Chesterfield Police, the shooting took place in the front of the store with a few customers still inside.

Surveillance footage from the Wawa shows the suspect, 34-year-old George Thomas Buschmann, in a white shirt and jeans.

Authorities started chasing the suspect around 2 a.m. when he was spotted in Powhatan County. Officers followed him into Chesterfield and then Richmond. The pursuit eventually ended on Chamberlayne Road in Henrico, near the Hanover County line. Police used spike strips to stop the car.

Buschmann was taken into custody and charged with first-degree murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, grand larceny of a motor vehicle, felony eluding, possession of a firearm after being involuntarily committed and transporting a firearm while being subject to a protective order. He is being held in the Chesterfield County Jail pending a court appearance.

The investigation indicates that Buschmann and the victim didn’t know each other, and police continue to investigate a motive for the shooting.

Authorities thanked the public for their tips, which helped them locate the suspect.
