HANOVER COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — A Richmond man has been charged on Friday, according to an email from Virginia State Police, after veering into a tractor-trailer, causing it to spin, overturn and take out several feet of a guardrail on Interstate 95 in Hanover County.
Elwood Friend Jr. was driving a 2003 Saturn sedan, traveling in the right lane of I-95 South, when he drifted into the left lane and struck a tractor hauling an empty trailer.
After the collision, the tractor-trailer spun out and overturned on the right shoulder of the interstate. The tractor took out several feet of the guardrail.
State Police says Friend, who was not hurt in the crash, has been charged with an unsafe lane change.
Daniel Mays, the driver of the tractor-trailer, was taken to a nearby hospital with minor injuries, according to police. Mays, a 68-year-old from Georgia, was wearing his seatbelt during the crash.
The crash is still under investigation.
